Why goals are so important

I believe that you can create your ideal life by fully utilizing your 24 hours each day. That by using your time in an effective manner and by being deliberate with it, you can create a life that your previous self would look to in awe.

One where you are the master of your time.

One where you wake up each day and can decide how your time is spent: traveling more, or working with your hands, or starting a business, or being a more available parent.

The ideal life is one where you can do whatever you want to do, because you own your time. With that in mind, there are a lot of ways that you can make that happen.

Learning about productivity and time management is certainly a good way to do that. But, I'd argue that when it comes to building your ideal life, the best place to start is with goal setting.


Why goal setting?

You can be motivated, you can be a time management pro, you can have the best habits, but if you don't know where you're heading none of that matters.

It's like you're exploring the jungle and have 2 options:

  • Option 1 - You can have a bike
  • Option 2 - You can have a map and compass

If you choose the bike, you'll be able to navigate the jungle much faster than by foot. What you would have covered in a day walking you can cover in a couple hours by bike.

You can move quickly. But at the same time, you have no idea where you are or where you're going.

Conversely, if you choose the map and compass you'll know exactly where you are and in which direction to head. You'll be moving much slower than if you would have chosen the bike, but with the map and compass you'll be able to navigate the jungle with confidence and be able to avoid wasting time going in circles.

So what would you choose?

If it were up to me, I'd take map and compass every time.


Map and compass

Goal setting is your map and compass. Goal setting shows you where you are today, where you want to go tomorrow, and how to get there.

It gives you both the directions out of the jungle as well as the steps that you need to take to get there.

That is your life with goals and that's why goal setting is so important: it allows you to imagine your ideal life and put steps into place to make it happen.

But what about the bike? Wouldn't that be nice to have too?

It definitely would!

It wouldn't be helpful without your map and compass though.

The bike in this case are the things that help you move faster and more efficiently - productivity, time management, habits, motivation, etc. They are the things that help take you from 1 mile per hour to 100 miles per hour. But you need to have goals in place before working on those other things.

Otherwise you risk moving quickly, but in circles. You don't want that. You want progress.

So for now, focus on your goals and then hop on your bike once that's ready.
